Capital Men Place Fourth, Women Seventh at All-Ohio Indoor Championships

(ADA, Ohio) – Capital University's track & field team took a trip to Ohio Northern for the All-Ohio Indoor Championships Saturday and had terrific showing with men finishing fourth out of 18 teams and the women coming in seventh out of 17 teams.

For the men, Capital's 51 points trailed third place Wilmington (55) by only four and also Ohio Northern (80) and Mount Union (106). On the women's side, Capital's 31 points came in just behind Mount Union (37) and John Carroll (38). Baldwin-Wallace's women won the meet with 93 total points.

Capital lone top finisher was junior Syl Eddy (Columbus/Bishop Ready) who was tops in the triple jump at 43 feet, nine and three quarters inches (43-09.75) and outdistanced the second place jumper by over a foot.

In two sprinting events, Jeremy Mulkey (Dublin/Dublin Coffman) took fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.62 and Charlie Smith (Westerville/Big Walnut) also finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.33 seconds. As a group, the Crusaders 4x200 meter relay team came in second with a time of 1:31.22.

Capital's top hurdler Nate Thornhill (Xenia/Xenia) came in third the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.86 seconds, while Evan Hartman (Mt. Gilead/Mt. Gilead) and Thornhill came in fourth and fifth respectively in the high jump; Hartman jumped six feet, three and a half inches (6-03.50) and Thornhill leapt six feet, two and quarter inches (6-02.25).

For the women, both the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams were outstanding on the afternoon. The 4x200 team finished second with a time of 1:47.55, less than a second behind Baldwin-Wallace, while the 4x400 meter team came in third with a time of 4:10.76.

Senior Erica Basinger (West Jefferson/Worthington Kilbourne) had a solid meet, finishing fourth in the 55-meter dash at 7.60 seconds and fifth in the long jump as she leapt 16 feet, seven and a quarter inches (16-07.25).

Sophomore Christina Heineike (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) came in sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 32 feet, eleven and three quarter inches (32-11.75).

Capital will host the Greater Columbus Championships next Saturday at The Capital Center. The meet is set to start at 2 p.m.
