Crusader Men Take First, Women Second in Purple & White Invite

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Capital University’s men’s indoor track team placed first and the women finished second out of five teams competing at the Purple & White Invitational Friday at The Capital Center in Columbus, Ohio.

First place finishers for the men included Derek and Doug Gibbons (Troy/Troy) in the pole vault at 14-feet, six inches, as well as Charlie Smith (Westerville/Big Walnut) in the 500-meter run (1:06.66). Jeremy Mulkey (Dublin/Dublin Coffman) won the 55-meter dash in 6.63 seconds.

Nate Thornhill (Xenia/Xenia) and Evan Hartman (Mt. Gilead/Mt. Gilead) tied for second in the high jump at six feet, two inches. Thornhill also took second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.87 seconds.

Syl Eddy (Columbus/Bishop Ready) placed second in the triple jump with 41-feet, nine and a quarter inches. Freshman Brent Bolz (Westerville/Westerville South) qualified for the OAC meet in the triple jump and also placed third in the long jump (20-feet, nine and a quarter inches).

For the women, Christina Heineike (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) won the triple jump with 31-feet, 10 and three-quarters inches. Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati/Withrow International) placed second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.69 seconds, and Liz Ramsey (North Canton/Hoover) took second in the 300-meter dash with a time of 43.73.

Both men’s and women’s 4x200 meter relay teams placed first. The men’s team, comprised of Desmond Taylor (Toledo/Toledo St. Johns), Smith, Trent Hinton (Columbus/Whetstone) and Mulkey finished in 1:30.94 and broke the Capital indoor record as the group to finish under 1:31. The women’s team finished in 1:48.35 and was made up of Erica Basinger (West Jefferson/Worthington Kilbourne), Stanton, Amanda Damsel (Westerville/Westerville South) and Abby Skoda (Ashland/Ashland).

The men’s 4x400 team also won their event in 3:29.93, led by Brian Pelanda (Marysville/Marysville), Zach Porter (Fairborn/Fairborn), Smith and Taylor. The women’s 4x400 also took first as Basinger, Stanton, Ramsey, and junior Amanda Whitmer (Alexandria/Northridge) came from behind in the last two legs to take home the title.

Capital will travel to Kenyon a week from today in their next meet and then compete at Ohio Northern at the All-Ohio Indoor event on Saturday.
