Capital Captures Men's and Women's Titles at Crusader Invitational

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)-- Capital University's indoor track & field team cruised their way to men's and women's team titles as they got off to a good start in 2006 hosting the Crusader Invitational at The Capital Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The men took the team title with 152 points, followed by Heidelberg with 148 and Rio Grande with 94, while the women ran away with first place with 183 points, outdistancing second place Muskingum (87 points) by 96.

On the men's side, junior Nate Thornhill (Xenia/Xenia) turned in two impressive performances, qualifying for the OAC meet in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.83 and also in the high jump with as he and junior Evan Hartman (Mt. Gilead/Mt. Gilead) both jumped six feet, four inches.

Freshman Brent Bolz (Westerville/Westerville South) won the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 10 1/4 inches, while fellow junior Syl Eddy (Columbus/Bishop Ready) too the top spot in the triple jump with a mark of 42-08.00.

Sophomore Desmond Taylor (Toledo/Toledo St. Johns) had an OAC qualifying time of 6.67 in the 55 meter dash, finishing fifth overall, while junior Charlie Smith (Westerville/Big Walnut) took first in the 500 meter dash with a time 1:08.33 seconds and also qualified for the OAC's.

For the women, winners included sophomore Laura Earhart (Pickerington/Pickerington) in the pole vault at eight feet, 11.75 inches and freshman Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati/Withrow International) in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 9.75 inches.

Sophomore Kayle Frock (North Canton/North Canton Hoover) took second in the high jump at four feet, 11.75 inches and senior Erica Basinger (West Jefferson/Worthington Kilbourne) finished behind Stanton in the long jump at 15 feet, 4.75 inches. Sophomore Christina Heineike (Sunbury/Buckeye Valley) also took second in the triple jump.

In the running events, sophomore Abby Skoda (Ashland/Ashland) and Basinger finished second and third in the 55 meter dash with times of 7.81 and 7.82 respectively, just missing the cut for the OAC qualifier. The Crusaders took the top two spots in the 1 mile run as freshman Shelly Gaines (Grove City/Central Crossing) and junior Tayler Blake (Nashport/Tri-Valley) both broke the Capital indoor record for the mile run with times of 5:32.01 and 5:32.76 respectively.

Finally, the Capital women's distance medley team of junior Melissa Burgei (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf), senior Julie Dahlinghaus (Minster/Minster), Gaines and junior Kerri Miller (Lancaster/William Fisher) took first with a time of 14:24.61.

Capital will travel to Otterbein next Saturday for their second meet of 2006.
