(COLUMBUS, Ohio)--Capital
University head softball
coach Nan Payne notched her 200th career victory in a 3-0 game one win as
the Crusaders swept a pair of non-conference games from Ohio Wesleyan University Wednesday at Clowson Field in Columbus, Ohio.
Payne now stands at 201-121-3 in her eighth season on the bench as she watched
the Crusaders get back over .500 now at 18-17-1 on the season, while Ohio
Wesleyan fell to 20-16. In game one, junior Jen Heidenreich (Xenia/Xenia)
pitched seven shutout innings and allowed only a single hit to improve to 9-12
on the season. Offensively for the
Crusaders, junior shortstop Brittany Cloud (Troy/Troy) went three-for-three at the plate
with two doubles.
The Crusaders got on the board first early in
the first inning after Cloud doubled and then scored to give the Crusaders a 1-0
lead. Capital scored a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI
single from Mandy Sladoje (Lancaster/Lancaster) and an RBI groundout from
Erin Willike (Newark/Licking Valley) for the 3-0 final.
Willeke pitched game two and recorded a shutout of her own
as she surrendered
only three hits and struck out five to go to 9-5 on the campaign. Capital scored first with a run
in the second inning before opening the game up with a five-run fourth inning.
The game was officially over after two more runs were scored in the sixth inning
as Capital won 8-0. Lindsey Shepherd
(Phillipsburg/Northmont) led the team in hitting, going two-for-three at the
plate and scoring one run. Andi White
(Granville/Newark) was one-for-two at the plate and scored two runs while Jackie Burris (Beach Park, Ill./Warren Township) was two-for-three.
Cloud finished the night with five hits, three
doubles and four runs batted in. Capital
finishes out the season with a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheaders
