Crusaders Split a Pair With The Berg

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)--Capital University's softball team split a pair of games against their Ohio Athletic Conference foes, Heidelberg College, on Wednesday 1-2 and 4-3 at Clowson Field.

The Crusaders improve to 14-13-1overall (3-5 OAC) for the season while the Berg move to 8-17 overall (1-7 OAC).

The first game boasted a stellar performance by senior pitcher Jen Heidenreich (Xenia/Xenia), who pitched all seven innings, surrendered four hits and did not allow an earned run.  Heidelberg got on the board in the top of the first inning and would not see another base runner until fifth, as the Crusader's defense denied 12 consecutive Heidelberg batters.

Heidelberg managed to add another run in the top of the sixth, bringing the score to 2-0.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Crusader's offense attempted a two-out comeback when junior Brittany Cloud (Troy/Troy) scored to cut the lead to 2-1, but the comeback would end their as the Crusaders fell to the Berg 2-1, moving their record to 12-12-1.

The Crusaders opened the second game scoring three runs on three hits as the Crusaders take an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Heidelberg came back with two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth, then tied it with a run in the top of the sixth to send the game to extra innings.

Heidenreich came back on the mound in the eighth inning and no-hit The Berg for three innings then in the bottom of the 10th drove in senior Mandy Sladoje (Lancaster/Lancaster) for the victory.

Capital hosts OAC and cross-town rival Otterbein College Friday at 1 p.m. at Clowson Field.
