(BETHANY, W. Va.)--
Capital University's softball team returned home with two road wins Sunday
afternoon with a 5-2 extra inning victory, followed by another 9-2 win over
Bethany (W. Va.) College. The Crusaders
improve to 13-12-1 overall for the season while the Bison fall to 11-15 overall.
The first game challenged both teams down to the
very end. Capital got on the board first in the third inning when Maureen
Bickley (Port Clinton/Port Clinton) scored on a single by Cortney Bastian
(Brookville/Brookville). The Crusaders
again scored in the seventh when Bickley again crossed home plate after a single
by Lisa Tubbs (Hudson, Ind./Prairie Heights). Later on in the inning, two
errors by Capital aided Bethany to tie the score at 2-2.
Battling down to the 15th inning, three Bethany
errors would lead to three Crusader runs that would eventually lead to the win.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Willeke (Newark/Licking Valley) earned the win for
Capital in the 8.2 innings pitched, moving her record to 7-3 overall.
The Crusaders ended their travels south with another
win against the Bison. This time around went a bit better for Capital than the
game before. A good sign was jumping out to a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning.
Four of those runs came in that inning, three of
which at the hands of senior Mandy Sladoje (Lancaster/Lancaster) on her
double. Sladoje would also cross the plate on a passed ball. Capital would go on
to win, 9-2. Junior pitcher Jen
Heidenreich (Xenia/Xenia) picked up the win for the Crusaders to move to 6-9
overall. Capital had five RBIs during this match, three from Sladoje in the
fourth and one each from Willeke and Jackie Burris (Beach Park, Ill./Warren
Township). Capital hops back into the
Ohio Athletic Conference schedule when it hosts Heidelberg Wednesday at 3:30
