(CINCINNATI, Ohio) - Capital
University's softball team took the field Monday after a nine-day hiatus and
split two games at The College Mount St. Joseph, winning game one 6-0 before
falling in the nightcap 3-2 at J. Page Hayden Field in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Capital is now 9-7 on the season, while Mount St. Joseph is 3-9.
Three runs came across the board for the Crusaders in the first, the big blow
coming on a two-RBI single from senior center fielder Mandy Sladoje
(Lancaster/Lancaster).
Junior Jen Heidenreich (Xenia/Xenia) also picked up two RBIs in the first
game, while Sladoje and sophomore third baseman Lindsay Shepherd
(Phillipsburg/Northmont) each tallied two hits on the afternoon.
Sophomore Erin Willeke (Newark/Licking Valley) picked up the win on the
mound, tossing a three-hitter while striking out five. Willeke improves to 6-1
on the season.
The Crusaders struggled to get on the scoreboard in game two, not scoring a run
until the sixth inning when they crossed the plate twice.
After two outs and a Shepherd single, Sladoje came through with a two-run homer,
bringing Capital within one run at 3-2.
Another two-out rally was in store for the bottom of seventh as the Crusaders
got two runners on before junior second baseman Brittany Cloud (Troy/Troy)
grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat.
Heidenreich and Willeke each pitched three innings with Heidenreich picking up
the loss and falling to 3-6 on the season.
The Crusaders will play next on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Thomas
More (Ky.) College for a double-header starting at 3 p.m. |
