Dwight Burgess
Head Men's & Women's Soccer Coach
ph: (614) 236-6375
e-mail: dburgess@capital.edu
All things soccer on the Capital
University campus point to one man - Dwight Burgess. Burgess
enters his seventh season as head coach of the Capital men's soccer program and begins his
fifth as head coach of the Crusader women's program.
In his six seasons at the helm, Burgess has changed the face of Capital
men's soccer with the team winning 12 games in 2005, the most since the
1989 season. Topping off the 12-win campaign was the Crusaders first Ohio
Athletic Conference Tournament birth since 1992 and Burgess garnering OAC
Coach-of-the-Year honors.
Four years ago
Burgess took over a women's program that has been one of the Great Lakes
region's elite programs and has not disappointed as the Crusaders claimed the
OAC's regular season title two years ago and advanced to the OAC Tournament
championship game. Burgess led the women to the OAC Tournament for the
second-straight year in 2005 as they have a combined 13-3-2 record in the
OAC over the past two seasons.
Under Burgess both teams have succeeded in the classroom as well as on the
field. Last year both the men's and women's teams were recognized by the
National Soccer Coaches Association with the College Team Academic
Award. The award is given to college soccer teams that post a team grade
point average of 3.0 or higher.

As a player, Burgess competed in four consecutive OHSAA Final Four Tournaments
for Centerville High School. A college standout, he twice earned All-America
honors and helped DePauw (Ind.) University to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA
Tournament as the team’s leading scorer, before transferring to University
of Dayton where he played soccer for the Flyers.
After college he was selected to two training camps for the United States
National Program and named captain for a pair of regional all-star teams
scoring two goals in international matches.
Burgess began focusing on the sidelines in 1983. His resume features 10
seasons of coaching at the high school level, including winning a state
championship, before two years as the head assistant coach and recruiting
coordinator at The Ohio State University.
Burgess spent two years on the Ohio South ODP Staff and has served as a
clinician for the NSCAA and Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew. He
was also the founder and coaching director for F.C. Dayton Premiere and
assistant coaching director for Hilliard F.C.
Burgess earned his national coaching
license in 1990, a Master’s Degree from Ohio State in 1991 and when not
coaching or playing soccer he is the radio play-by-play voice of the Major
League Soccer's Columbus Crew. Recently, Burgess was honored for his ten years
of service as the "Voice of the Crew" in September of 2005 and in the
meantime has done various radio and
television work, including US Soccer matches and most recently the Atlantic 10
Women's Championship on Fox Sports Net.
