Damon Goodwin enters his 13th season as head coach at Capital and has established as one of the elite teams in not only the Ohio Athletic Conference, but the region and all of NCAA Division III.

He has brought success and respect to the Capital program. In just his second season in Columbus he guided the Crusaders to a 19-8 overall record, and an NCAA Tournament appearance, while earning OAC Coach of the Year honors.  Four years ago, he led Capital to a school-record 23 wins, while three years ago brought the school its first OAC title in 19 seasons. 

Prior to becoming the Crusaders head coach, he served five seasons as an assistant coach at Wittenberg University. During his time there, the Tigers won five North Coast Athletic Conference titles, earned four NCAA Tournament bids and a final four appearance in 1994.

As a player, the St. Mary, Ohio, native earned first team All-Ohio honors at St. Mary’s Memorial High School in 1982, before attending the University of Dayton.

He helped lead the Flyers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1984 and 1985 where the eventual national champion (Georgetown and Villanova) eliminated them each season. Upon leaving Dayton, Goodwin was taken in the seventh round (147 overall) of the NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. He spent the summer out West before returning that fall to begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Dayton. 

Goodwin’s first head coaching job was a two-year stint at Fairborn High School in Fairborn, Ohio, before joining the staff at Wittenberg.

Goodwin, who also is Capital’s assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach, resides in Hilliard, Ohio, with wife Danielle and their three children, 14-year-old Grant, 12-year-old Addison, and 5-year-old Dane.

Assistant Coach John Ellenwood

John Ellenwood is in his fourth season as an assistant basketball coach at Capital.

Ellenwood comes to Columbus after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at nearby Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Ellenwood's duties included working with the post players, coordinating recruiting efforts and developing an off-season conditioning program among others.

Prior to his work with the Bishops, the Sylvania, Ohio native was an All-American and a three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference first team as a player at The College of Wooster earning a degree in Psychology in 2000. Ellenwood also has a master's degree from Bowling Green State University.

Aside from his basketball duties, Ellenwood is also an assistant athletic director in charge of fall game management and resides in Bexley.


Assistant Coach Eric Hanna
Eric Hanna is in his fifth season in his second stint as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Capital. Hanna served three years in this capacity with the Crusaders, before spending a year as an assistant coach at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N. Y.

Hanna played at Ohio State, earned the 1998 John Havlicek Award and was in the starting lineup for the Buckeyes final home game at St. John Arena. Off the court, the Youngstown native was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten and three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete selection. Hanna also won the Fergus Award as the OSU outstanding senior scholar-athlete and the basketball team’s Fred Taylor Scholar Award in 1998.

When not on the court, Hanna is a history teacher at Shannon Middle School in the Olentangy Local School District and resides in Lewis Center.

Assistant Coach Tony Joseph
Tony Joseph enters his third season as an assistant basketball coach at Capital.

Joseph is no stranger to Capital or Coach Goodwin, as he was an All-OAC guard, four year starter from 1995-99 and ranks eighth on the all-time scoring list with 1,449 points. He also helped guide Capital to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a freshman.

The Middletown, Ohio native, resides in Columbus.
