Crusaders Comeback Comes Up Short
Baldwin-Wallace 85, Capital 82 [Box
Score]
(BEREA, Ohio) - Capital University's men's
basketball team traveled to No. 18 Baldwin-Wallace College and staged a
impressive comeback, but came up just short, dropping the Ohio Athletic
Conference contest 85-82 at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.
The Crusaders drop to 4-5 on the year, 2-2 in the OAC, while Baldwin-Wallace
moves to 8-1 with a perfect 4-0 mark in the OAC.
A three-pointer by freshman guard Nate Stahl (St. Henry/St. Henry) gave
Capital a 22-21 lead at the 8:20 mark in a first half that was close
throughout until the Yellow Jackets went on a 26-14 run after Stahl's three to
give them a 47-36 lead going into the break.
Baldwin-Wallace's Tori Davis, who scored a game-high 26 points, sparked the
Yellow Jackets with 13 points during the run and a total of 19 in the half.
The Yellow Jackets held a double-digit lead for a good portion of the second
half, but the Crusaders were able to chip away and with an 11-2 run that
spanned five minutes they were able to cut the deficit to 64-60 with 8:30 to
play.
Although Capital never led in the second frame, they kept themselves in
striking distance and had a chance to tie but a Dave Johnson
(Cincinnati/Roger Bacon) jumper rattled out with six ticks on the clock
and the Yellow Jackets were able to escape with 85-82 win. The Crusaders shot
7-12 from behind the three-point line in the second half
Johnson, one of five double-digit scorers for the Crusaders, led the way with
16 points on the afternoon to go along with six assists. Stahl tallied 14
markers while post players Jake Meisler (Castalia/Margaretta) and Steve
Kyser (Sylvania/Sylvania Southview) each notched 12. Meisler tied for the
team lead with five rebounds. Sophomore forward Brad Buckner
(Milford/Milford) came off the bench for 10 points and five boards.
Capital will take a day off before returning home to The Capital Center to
host Denison University on Monday at 7 p.m.
