No. 10 Wittenberg Pulls Away From Capital; Hand Crusaders First Defeat of the
Year
Wittenberg 73, Capital 54 [Box
Score]
(SPRINGFIELD, Ohio)—Capital University's men's
basketball team was dealt their first loss of the season as they fell to No.
10 Wittenberg 73-54 in a non-conference matchup at the HPER Center in
Springfield, Ohio.
The score was not indicative of the way the contest was played, as the game
got out of hand late, but was closely played throughout. Capital never led in
the game, but the score didn't turn into a double-digit lead for the Tigers
until the 8:30 mark of the second half.
Wittenberg scored on their first three possessions of the game with their
guards hitting from outside as they did all night.
Guards Phil Steffes and Billy Bowen, along with Wittenberg's leading
scorer, forward Kenny Brady, all scored in double figures with Steffes
going a perfect 6-6 from the field and scoring 15. Bowen and Brady each had 12
markers.
Both squads shot the ball well in the first period as each were right around
50% from the field, but the second half was a different story as the
Wittenberg turned up their defense a notch and held the Crusaders in check.
The Crusaders went into the locker room down only five with hopes of upsetting
the No. 10 team in the country and started off strong in the second period
before Wittenberg pulled away and Capital went on a five minute scoring
drought, scoring only two points in that span.
Capital's aforementioned shooting woes (8-25) from the field in the second
half sealed the game as they were also outrebounded 37-21 by the Tigers.
Sophomore forward Steve Kyser (Sylvania/Sylvania Southview) had his
third straight double-figure scoring game as he led the way with 11 points and
also grabbed seven boards.
Junior point guard Dave Johnson (Cincinnati/Roger Bacon) went for nine
points and also dished out three assists in the loss.
Next up for the Crusaders is another road contest at Mount St. Joseph on
Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
