(NEW CONCORD, Ohio) -- Capital University's baseball team went on the road for their final two regular season contests of the 2006 season and lost both to Muskingum College by scores of 5-2 and 12-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference action in New Concord, Ohio.

The Crusaders started the day in the hunt for one of the final two playoff spots in the four team OAC postseason tournament, but after their first loss to the Muskies and a Heidelberg win over Mount Union, Capital was eliminated from contention before the second game even started.

Losing two puts the Crusaders at a 16-21 final record on the season and 8-10 in the OAC, while Muskingum improved to 21-19, 8-10 in the conference. Both the Crusaders and Muskies tie for fifth place in the OAC standings.

Muskingum jumped on Capital starter Nick Brown (Kirtland/NDCL) in the second and third innings, scoring a combined five runs and to chase Brown from the game. Brown took the loss and ends the season with a 3-2 record.

Capital scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings as sophomore catcher Bill Christian (Poland/Seminary) knocked in junior center fielder Jake Butler (Newark/Licking Valley) in the sixth and a Butler double in the seventh chased home junior outfielder Jimmy Haas (Fremont/St. Joseph).

Sophomore Chris Trainer (Chillicothe/Unioto) relieved Brown and tossed three scoreless innings.

In game two, Capital scored in the first inning as Christian brought home sophomore second baseman Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling) with a single, but the Muskies answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning off Crusader starter Aaron Hurney (Chesterville/Sparta-Highland).

Hurney pitched into the fifth, but surrendered seven runs on ten hits, while walking three.

Capital added runs in the third and fourth innings with a Mike St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) home run and an RBI single from sophomore first baseman Chris Stembridge (Mexico, Mo./Mexico), but would not be able to cross the plate again.

Meanwhile, the Muskies offense did not let down as they tacked on three more runs in the sixth after a five run fifth, to pull away from the Crusaders by a final tally of 12-3.

Hurney took the loss and drops to 4-5 on the year, while seniors Marcus Mercer (North Canton/Hoover) and T.J.Brown (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) pitched in relief for the final time their careers to close the game.
