Hurney Shines in Relief as Crusaders Split OAC Twinbill with Wilmington
Wilmington 10, Capital 4 [Box Score]
Capital 7, Wilmington 6 [Box Score]

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)-- Behind a sparkling relief performance from senior hurler Aaron Hurney (Chesterville/Sparta-Highland), Capital University's baseball team came from behind to win 7-6 in game two of an Ohio Athletic Conference double-dip with Wilmington College, however the Crusaders lost game one 10-4 at Clowson Field in Columbus, Ohio.

With a split against the Quakers, Capital runs its record to 16-19 on the season, 8-8 in the OAC. Wilmington goes to 14-16 (6-10 OAC). A split still keeps the Crusaders in the hunt for one of the final two playoff spots.

Each team scored in the first inning in game one, however the Quakers also added runs in the five innings after, taking a 10-1 advantage heading into the seventh inning.

Sophomore righty Chris Trainer (Chillicothe/Unioto) made it through only one and a third innings and took the loss, dropping his record to 3-5 on the season.

Capital scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but would ultimately fall 10-4. Wilmington starter Jamison George limited the Crusaders to only two hits in the contest, two by junior first baseman Will Rutherford (Cincinnati/Deer Park). Rutherford also scored a run and had an RBI.

Junior centerfielder Jake Butler (Newark/Licking Valley) accounted for two RBIs with a solo home run in the first inning and run scoring groundout in the seventh.

Capital put up the biggest inning of the day for either team as it pounded Quakers starter Ronnie Campbell for four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead.

Four straight hits started off the inning, with an RBI triple coming from senior right fielder T.J. Brown (Dublin/Dublin Scioto), a run scoring single from Butler, an RBI single from freshman shortstop Nick Snider (Granville/Granville) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore second baseman Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling).

Crusader starter Bryan White (Newark/Licking Valley) pitched three and two thirds innings and surrendered six runs on seven hits while striking out two before being relieved by Hurney.

With the score tied 6-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, a clutch pinch-hit triple from junior Jimmy Haas (Fremont/St. Joseph) to lead off the inning, followed by intentional walks to to sophomore left fielder Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) and Brown to load the bases brought Butler to the plate.

Wilmington brought on lefty reliever Matt Meyer to face Butler who promptly drilled the junior outfielder in the leg with curveball on the first pitch to end the contest.

Hurney was near perfect for the final three and a third frames, giving up only one hit while striking out a pair. He improves to 4-4 on the year and lowers his ERA to 3.88.

Butler was 2-3 in the second game with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs as he drove in a total of four runs on the day.

Capital will travel to Muskingum College on Saturday afternoon for its final OAC regular season matchup as they face off at 1 p.m. against the Fighting Muskies.
