(COLUMBUS, Ohio)-- Capital University's baseball team took advantage of
two strong starts by freshman Nick Brown (Kirtland/Notre Dame Cathedral
Latin) and senior Aaron Hurney (Chesterville/Sparta-Highland), as
well as a perfect day at the plate from sophomore Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg),
in sweeping John Carroll University 13-6 and 6-4 in an Ohio Athletic
Conference series Saturday at Clowson Field.
The
victories put Capital at 15-18 (7-7 OAC) and into a fourth place tie in the
OAC with the Blue Streaks (21-14, 8-8) and kept hope alive the Crusaders
chances of claiming a spot in the four-team OAC Tournament.
Capital's
offense gave Nick Brown a big lead in the first game. St. John hit a leadoff
home run in the first, and senior T.J. Brown (Dublin/Dublin Scioto)
scored on a balk for a 2-0 lead. The Crusaders then scored seven runs in the
second inning, as St. John hit his second homer, a two-run shot, and
sophomore catcher Bill Christian (Poland/Poland Seminary) hit a two-run
homer later in the inning.
The
Blue Streaks scored three runs in the top of the third, but Capital responded
with two more runs in the bottom half for an 11-3 lead. The Crusaders tacked
on two more runs in the fifth, while John Carroll added solo runs in the
fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Nick
Brown (3-1, 3.35 ERA) threw his first complete game of the season, giving up
eight hits and four earned runs. St. John went 4-for-4 from the plate with
four RBI and four runs scored, and T.J. Brown and junior Jake Butler (Newark/Licking
Valley) had two hits apiece.
In game two, junior third baseman Graham
Holmberg (Newark/Newark) hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to break
a 4-4 tie.
The Crusaders led 4-2 in the top of the fifth,
but the Blue Streaks tied it on an RBI single by Sean McCarthy and an unearned
run. In the bottom half, sophomore
second baseman Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling) doubled,
and Holmberg hit the second pitch he saw from relief pitcher Matt McKinnon
over the left field fence.
Capital's
offense had struck early again in the first inning, as St. John scored on an
error by Blue Streaks second baseman Doug Snider. The Crusaders scored two
more runs in the third, starting the inning with four straight singles, with
shortstop Andy Daggett (Springfield/Springfield-Shawnee) scoring on
Butler's RBI base-hit. Hutchison added a sac fly to score St. John for a 3-0
Crusaders lead.
Hurney
(3-4, 4.19) threw a complete game for the Crusaders, giving up seven hits and
two earned runs while striking out five. Brown and Hurney's complete games
were the first two thrown by Capital pitchers on the season.
St.
John went 3-for-3 with a sac fly, an RBI and two runs scored, making him
7-for-7 on the day with two home runs, six runs scored and five RBI. He is now
batting .483 this season.
Capital
hosts Wilmington College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday at
Clowson Field.
