Crusaders Split With Yellow Jackets
Weyrich Earns Career Win No. 300

Capital 4, Baldwin-Wallace 3 (8 innings) [Box Score]
Baldwin-Wallace 10, Capital 6 [Box Score]

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)-- Capital University's baseball team took game one of an Ohio Athletic Conference twinbill against Baldwin-Wallace College by a score of 4-3, but fell 10-6 in game two this afternoon at Clowson Field in Columbus, Ohio.

With a split the Crusaders move to 13-16 on the season and an even 5-5 in the OAC, while Baldwin-Wallace stays above .500 at 17-16, but holds a mark 5-9 mark in the conference.

The win also gives Capital head coach Greg Weyrich is 300th career win.  Weyrich in his third year with the Crusaders spent seven seasons before that at Columbus State Community College.

The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in game one with a pair of runs in the second inning and Capital followed with one in the third when sophomore second baseman Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling) doubled and was brought around to score on a single by sophomore right fielder Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg)

Crusader starter Nick Brown (Kirtland/NDCL) cruised along after the second and gave up only one hit and an unearned run over the next five frames.

Capital would tack on a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the Yellow Jackets at three. Then, after a scoreless seventh, the Crusaders won in dramatic fashion in the eighth as a Jimmy Haas (Fremont/St. Joseph) bunt brought home sophomore shortstop Andy Daggett (Springfield/Springfield-Shawnee) just ahead of the tag of Baldwin-Wallace catcher Bob Storesina to give Capital an extra-inning triumph.

Neither Haas or Daggett started the game, but came off the bench to provide a spark to the Crusader offense in the eighth.

Junior Graham Holmberg (Newark/Newark) started the game at third base, but relieved Brown and tossed a scoreless eighth for his first career victory.

After a scoreless first inning in game two, Baldwin-Wallace erupted for six runs in the top of the second, all with two outs. Capital starter Bryan White (Newark/Licking Valley) hit two batters, there were two errors made behind him, and the big blow when Yellow Jacket left fielder smacked a bases clearing double to deep left center, bringing home three and giving Baldwin-Wallace a six-run advantage.

Capital clawed back, scoring two runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to bring them within 7-6.

Key hits came from junior first baseman Will Rutherford (Cincinnati/Deer Park), who had a two-RBI single in the fourth and junior center fielder Jake Butler (Newark/Licking Valley) who smacked a solo home run in the fifth, his first of the year and second of his career.

Senior Aaron Hurney (Chesterville/Sparta-Highland) took the ball in top of the third for Capital and pitched admirably for four and a third innings, giving up four runs on six hits, keeping the Crusaders in the game until a three-run homer from Yellow Jacket designated hitter Riley Kreisher in the top of the seventh gave Baldwin-Wallace a commanding four-run lead.

Butler, Rutherford, freshman Nick Snider (Granville/Granville), and junior catcher Bill Christian (Poland/Poland Seminary) each tallied two hits in game two, while Butler, Snider, and Christian all notched four hits on the day.

Capital hosts Thomas More (Ky.) College on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game at Clowson Field.
