Capital Hits Double-Digit Wins on the Road
Capital 8, Cedarville 6 [Box Score]

(CEDARVILLE, Ohio)-- Capital University ’s baseball team won their 10th game of the season today, defeating Cedarville University 8-6 in non-conference action at Yellow Jacket Field in Cedarville, Ohio.

The Crusaders improve to 10-15 (2-4 OAC) on the season, while Cedarville drops to 11-21 (3-9 AMC).

Each team put up crooked numbers in the first inning, with the Crusaders scoring three to the Yellow Jackets two. Back-to-back RBI singles from freshman catcher Nick Snider (Granville/Granville) and junior third baseman Graham Holmberg (Newark/Newark) plated two runs, then after junior right fielder Jimmy Haas (Fremont/St. Joseph) reached on an error by the Yellow Jackets’ second baseman, senior designated hitter Matt Stembridge (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) recorded a run-scoring groundout, bringing home Snider.

Capital scored two more in the second as junior center fielder Jake Butler (Newark/Licking Valley) drove in sophomore second baseman Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling) with a single which was followed up by a triple from Snider bringing Butler across the dish.

Cedarville answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame with a pair of walks and a pair of singles to make the score 5-4 after two innings.

Three scoreless innings followed before Capital tallied another score in the top of the sixth. After two outs, sophomore left fielder Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) reached on an error by third baseman Richie Reeder, stole second and was brought home on a single by Butler .

The Yellow Jackets again responded in the bottom of the seventh as they pushed a run across to make the score 6-5.

Capital tallied two runs in the ninth and Cedarville threatened to tie or even win the game in the bottom of the ninth, but senior T.J. Brown (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) got the final out of the game himself, fielding a slow-rolling grounder and diving to first base just ahead of Cedarville hitter Matt Totten as the game ended 8-6 with the bases full of Yellow Jackets.

Freshman righty Nathan Raines (Zanesville/John Glenn) won his first career game for the Crusaders, tossing six innings and giving up four runs on five hits. After giving up five hits in the first two frames, Raines settled down and did not allow a hit in his final four innings of work. He is now 1-1 on the season.

Brown pitched the final three innings and gave up two runs, but recorded the save, the first of his career.

Butler was 3-4 in the game with three runs scored, two RBIs and also stole two bases. St. John and Snider each had two hits as well, while Snider added two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Cedarville's Derek Koogler took the loss and he drops to 3-5 on the year.

Capital hits the road again tomorrow as they travel to Ohio Northern University for a key Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against the Polar Bears at 1 p.m. in Ada, Ohio.
