Capital Falls in a Slugfest 20-18
Mt. Vernon Nazarene 20, Capital 18
[Box Score]
(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - Capital University's baseball team came out on the short end of the stick Wednesday afternoon in a 20-18 slugfest against visiting Mt. Vernon Nazarene University at Clowson Field in Columbus, Ohio.

In a game where there were four lead changes, 38 runs, 39 hits, eight errors and nine homeruns hit, the Crusaders came up just short and fell to 8-14 on the year (1-3 OAC.)

Mt. Vernon Nazarene improves to 12-13 overall.

After a four-run first inning in the top of the first for the Cougars, Capital responded with five runs before Cougar starter Brandon Turner could record an out. Juniors Graham Holmberg (Newark/Newark) and Jimmy Haas (Fremont/St. Joseph) each homered in the bottom of the first to account for all the Crusader runs.

Both teams scored runs in the next three innings and after a scoreless fifth, the Crusaders tacked on another five-spot in the bottom of the sixth to take their last lead of the contest at 16-15. Capital smacked seven hits in the sixth frame and junior Will Rutherford (Cincinnati/Deer Park) drove in two runs with a single to give him three for the game.

A two-run homer in the seventh and a pair of hits after two outs in the eighth for the Cougars put them back on top to stay with a 20-16 lead.

Capital scratched a pair of runs across in the eighth and ninth, but it was not enough as they were two runs short.

Crusader starter Nathan Raines (Zanesville/John Glenn) tossed an inning and a third before being relieved and the loss ultimately went to junior Jake Butler (Newark/Licking Valley) who threw four innings and gave up seven runs, but only two of them earned. The loss was Butler's first of the season and he falls to 0-1.

Jason Decker picked up the win for the Cougars and they had five players with three or more hits in the contest.

Holmberg homered twice in the game, to go along with Haas, sophomore shortstop Andy Daggett (Springfield/Springfield-Shawnee), and freshman Mike St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg).

Sophomore Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) had a game-high four hits and raised his team-high batting average to .481, while Rutherford collected three hits.

Capital will take a break until Saturday afternoon when they host Ohio Athletic Conference power Heidelberg College at 1 p.m. at Clowson Field.
