Crusaders Fall in Game One, Beat No. 17 Malone in Nightcap

(CANTON, Ohio) - Capital University's baseball team split a pair of games this afternoon against No. 17 (NAIA) ranked Malone College, losing a closely contested 6-5 contest before handling the Pioneers in game two 7-1 in Canton, Ohio.

With a split, Capital moves its record to 8-13 on the year, 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Malone is now 28-9 on the season.

After falling behind 6-2, Capital attempted to storm back in the top of the seventh and got three runs across the plate before losing 6-5.

The Crusaders smacked out 14 hits in the game and each team made two errors.

Senior Aaron Hurney (Chesterville/Sparta-Highland) took the loss for Capital as he pitched into the third before being relieved by fellow senior Marcus Mercer (North Canton/Hoover) who pitched the rest of the way.

Hurney is now 0-4 on the season.

Game two saw things turn for Capital as they pushed across a run in each of the first five innings and held Malone scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.

Sophomore Chris Trainer (Chillicothe/Unioto) took a no-hitter into the fourth frame and threw six innings with sophomore Mike Graffin (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) tossing a scoreless seventh.

Trainer picked up the win and improves to 2-3 on the season.

Sophomore outfielder Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) tallied five hits in the two games, while stealing a base and picking up two RBIs.

Junior Will Rutherford (Cincinnati/Deer Park) sparked the Crusaders in game two with two hits and two RBIs.

Capital will turn around and play again tomorrow, hosting Mt. Vernon Nazarene University at 4 p.m. at Clowson Field.
