Crusaders Fall in Extra Innings to Urbana

(URBANA,Ohio) - Capital University's baseball team fought back from a six-run deficit, only to fall 13-10 in 12 innings to Urbana University in a non-conference bout in Urbana, Ohio.

Capital has now lost seven straight games and drops to 6-11 (0-2 OAC) on the season while Urbana improves to 22-11.

Urbana jumped out to a 9-3 lead after six innings, the big frame coming in fifth for the Blue Knights as they scored four runs, with two runs coming across in both the fourth and sixth innings.

The Crusaders stormed back in the top of the seventh, tying the game at nine with a six-run outburst complete with walks, a hit by pitch and five hits, the big hit coming from junior third baseman Graham Holmberg (Newark/Newark) who drove in two runs with a triple.

After scoring again in the top of the eighth to go up 10-9 and holding the Blue Knights scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, Urbana would tie the game at 10 in the bottom of the ninth.

Both teams went scoreless for two extra innings before Blue Knight designated hitter Anthony Iacavone blasted a walk-off homerun to give Urbana the victory.

Sophomore Matt Stembridge (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) picked up the loss for the Crusaders, giving up three earned runs in only a third of an inning.

Holmberg, sophomore second baseman Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling), freshman first baseman Nick Snider (Granville/Granville), sophomore pitcher Chris Trainer (Chillicothe/Unioto), and junior cather Bill Christian (Poland/Poland Seminary) all tallied multi-hit games for the Crusaders, while sophomore outfielder Marc St. John (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) had three hits.

Capital travels to Mount Union on Saturday afternoon to take on the Purple Raiders at 1 p.m. in Alliance.
