Crusaders Drop Two Out of Three at Maryville

(MARYVILLE, Tenn.)-- After pulling out a hard-fought 6-5 victory on Friday afternoon, Capital University's baseball team dropped two games Saturday to Maryville (Tenn.) College at Scotland Yard in Maryville, Tenn.

Both Crusader losses on Saturday were by one run as they fell 5-4 game one and 3-2 in the nightcap. Capital is now 6-6 on the year, while Maryville improves to 5-12.

Friday's contest saw Capital fall behind early, but come back to score runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. The Fighting Scots put two runs on the board in the ninth before senior Aaron Hurney (Chesterville/Sparta-Highland) closed the door, throwing two-thirds of an inning to get the save.

Fellow senior Marcus Mercer (North Canton/Hoover) picked up the win, his first of the season.

Sophomore Ryan Hutchison (Columbus/Whitehall-Yearling), junior Jake Butler (Newark/Licking Valley), freshman Nick Snider (Granville/Granville), sophomore Bill Christian (Poland/Poland Seminary) each had multi-hit games.

Game one on Saturday was going the Crusaders way as they were leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth. However, the Fighting Scots would score a run in each of the next three innings to to win the contest 5-4.

Sophomore Chris Trainer (Chillicothe/Unioto) took the loss on the hill in relief of junior Bryan White (Newark/Licking Valley). White threw five innings, giving up three runs, before Trainer was scored on twice in the last two frames, dropping his record to 1-2 on the year.

Hutchison was again an offensive star for Capital with three hits, while scoring a run and driving one in.

Capital again lost a heartbreaker in game two as Maryville scored a run in the bottom of seventh for the second game in a row to beat the Crusaders 3-2.

Hurney, who picked up a big save on Friday, walked in the game-winning run in the nightcap Saturday as Capital again got out to a lead early in the contest, but could not hold the advantage. Hurney falls to 0-3 on the year.

Snider tallied two hits in the loss and drove in one of the two Crusader runs. Freshman hurler Nick Brown (Kirtland/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) had an impressive performance on the the loss, tossing five innings of three-hit ball and surrendering only two runs while striking out three.

Capital will take a few days off before traveling to Bluffton College for a 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday
